ZWA Cyprus participated at Love the Earth Festival!

Mother Earth at the Love the Earth Festival!

On the heart warming occasion of Mother’s Day, ZWA Cyprus joined Let’s Make Cyprus Green to celebrate the beloved Mother Earth at the Love the Earth Festival that took place on the 12th of May 2024! Honouring the incredible planet we call home with a day filled with eco-friendly activities, sustainability workshops, and a whole lot of love for our beautiful Earth.

Other Cyprus-based organisations were represented at the event. Many of them were eco-friendly businesses and NGOs such as Fashion Heritage, Fashion Revolution and Second Life. Items on sale included second-hand, vintage and snazzy redesigned clothing and accessories, beautiful scarves made 100% from recycled plastic bottles and stunning artworks made from plastic pieces by local artists. There were stalls with educational books for children and adults written by local authors, fragrant candles and soaps made from natural ingredients as well a range of sustainable items, such as refillable water bottles, reusable grocery bags, stainless steel and bamboo straws.

On the day of the festival, the Zero Waste Alliance Cyprus focused on actively promoting an ongoing online petition on endocrine disruptive chemicals (EDCs). Endocrine disruptors are found in many everyday products, including some plastic containers, food packaging materials and pesticides and have been associated with an increased risk of cancers and brain damage. The petition was created by the Cyprus International Institute for Environment and Public Health at the Cyprus University of Technology, together with the Cyprus Endocrine Society in November 2023, calling on the government to formulate and implement a strategic plan for controlling EDCs and to address their impacts on health and the environment.

Installation of the 6th refill station in Molos Promenade in Limassol

A special highlight of the day was the unveiling of a new water refill station on Molos Promenade in Limassol where the event took place. The station will provide free filtered drinking water for both people and their dogs, as it has a special bowl just for animals. This station is the 6th to be installed in Cyprus as part of the Lets Make Cyprus Green’s Refill Cyprus campaign.

The idea behind the Refill Cyprus campaign is to reduce single-use plastic bottles and encourage a shift towards reusable and refillable alternatives.
