Zero Waste Pedieos: findings from our clean-ups and waste audits

As part of the Pedieos Sustainability Festival, Zero Waste Alliance Cyprus participated in two clean-up and waste audit actions along the Pedieos river, bringing together volunteers (students) to care for the river and better understand the types of waste found in and around it.

The actions took place on two different dates and at two different locations as part of the wider festival programme, combining direct community action with simple waste data collection. Beyond removing litter from the area, the aim was also to identify recurring waste types and patterns, so that the conversation can move from clean-up alone to prevention and better solutions.

Through the two actions, we collected and recorded waste found along the riverbank and nearby public spaces. The findings show that the waste problem is not only about individual behaviour, but also about the wider systems, habits and infrastructure that shape what ends up in the environment.

For Zero Waste Alliance Cyprus, these actions were also a way to connect environmental care with public participation. The Pedieos river is a shared space, and keeping it healthy requires not only volunteer action but also stronger prevention measures, awareness, and collective responsibility.

We are sharing these findings as part of our contribution to the Pedieos Sustainability Festival and to support wider discussions on waste prevention, public space, and community involvement.
