In November 2025, the Zero Waste Alliance together with its members Friends of the Earth and Zero Food Waste Cyprus, in collaboration with MMC Learning Solutions, contributed to the GREASE Project (Green and Sustainable Food Educators) by creating educational videos highlighting practical solutions to food waste in Cyprus.
Through these videos, we shared the collective experience of our alliance, a movement of six organisations working together to build a Zero Waste future in Cyprus through advocacy, awareness raising, and hands-on action.
One of the key initiatives of the Zero Waste Alliance Cyprus on food waste prevention is its collaboration with the LIFE Integrated Project Zero Waste Cyprus which is coordinated by the Department of Environment of Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and the Environment . Within this framework, the project supports innovative actions for food waste prevention, like the food donation platform FoodConnect: the first food donation platform in Cyprus. FoodConnect enables businesses to safely and easily donate surplus food, reducing waste while supporting people in need. Alongside this, we run awareness campaigns, develop educational materials, and visit schools and communities to address food waste at its root.
Also part of the same project, initiatives like the grassroots example of Zero Food Waste Cyprus, are supported. In the second video, Demetra Theodotou. Operations & Social Media Manager at Zero Food Waste Cyprus, shares their storya powerful grassroots example: collecting leftover fresh produce from the Ohi farmers’ market in Nicosia and redistributing it to people in need. This simple yet impactful action demonstrates how community engagement can directly reduce food waste while strengthening social solidarity.
Looking ahead, the challenge is clear. Cyprus currently records the highest food waste per capita in the EU. But this also presents an opportunity. By building strong networks between communities, businesses, NGOs, and public authorities, we can create systems that work in practice; not just on paper.
Through collaborations, we are proud to share Cyprus’ journey and inspire educators and communities across Europe to take meaningful steps toward a more sustainable and equitable food system.
